Thank you for your interest in UC Irvine Department of Neurology’s residency program. The goal of our program is to provide an enriching, stimulating and successful educational and training environment for future neurologists. Our residency program recently received a four-year accreditation by the Residency Review Committee.

UC Irvine’s neurology department has 25 full-time teaching faculty members. In addition to general neurology, the department sponsors outstanding clinical programs in movement disorders, neuromuscular diseases, sleep disorders, epilepsy and related disorders, cerebrovascular diseases, multiple sclerosis, neuro-ophthalmology and headache.

Our faculty comprises highly experienced clinicians who enjoy teaching and interacting with medical staff. Furthermore, the department has strong ties to related disciplines such as neurosurgery and neuroradiology, at both UC Irvine Medical Center and  the VA Long Beach Healthcare System. In addition, there is a joint effort by neurology, neurosurgery and neuroradiology currently underway to establish a Clinical Neurosciences Center of Excellence at UC Irvine.

In 2009, UC Irvine Douglas Hospital opened, expanding available clinical neuroscience beds to 27, including 12 in a dedicated neuro-intensive care and six beds dedicated to inpatient epilepsy monitoring. In addition to the neurology ward service, there is an active neurology consulting service staffed by a neuro-hospitalist and residents see a broad array of neurologic disorders on other services.

The general and subspecialty neurology outpatient clinics are very active and are staffed by attendings who are committed to teaching. The combined experiences at the medical center in Orange and the VA in Long Beach provide residents with exposure to a wide range of neurological disorders from the most common to the esoteric.

Recent key advances within our department include becoming the first primary stroke center in Southern California to be certified by The Joint Commission, the establishment of the UC Irvine Healthcare's ALS and Neuromuscular Center, remodeling and expansion of the Center for Sleep Medicine, development of a multidisciplinary comprehensive epilepsy program and development of a surgical treatment program for Parkinson’s disease along with colleagues in neurosurgery. Other programs in our department are expanding.

We have recently recruited new faculty in the areas of neuromuscular diseases and stroke and have ongoing recruitments for additional specialists in stroke, movement disorders and multiple sclerosis. These and other features of the neurology department provide a very rich teaching environment for our residents, who receive excellent training in clinical neurology. Our goal is to make our residency training the very best.
