Assistant Professor of Neurology Lisa Flanagan has received a prestigious CAREER award from the National Science Foundation.
The CAREER award is one of the NSF’s most respected grants, given to support the early-career development of teacher-scholars who effectively integrate research and education into their organizations.
With the CAREER award, Flanagan will work to identify membrane characteristics of cells that will form neurons and astrocytes to improve their use in transplants to treat neurological injury and disease.
The funding will also train the next generation of scientists in interdisciplinary research utilizing engineering and biophysics to reveal new insights in biology. Her five-year award totals $830,000. Flanagan is also a member of the Sue & Bill Gross Stem Cell Research Center.
